#12: Nose Ring Hoop-la

In India the tradition of wearing nose rings is much more than making a fashion statement. For centuries nose rings symbolized fertility and marriage in Hindus and were a mandatory ornament for Muslim women.

This woman hails from one of the Indian states where size of the nose ring signifies the family's financial power and status in society. As financial power grows so does size of the ring. This ring is so big that her nose can no longer bear the weight. It is being held up by a piece of fabric that is attached to her hair as a headpiece.
